My rooster seems depressed and makes this screeching sound, usually he has a lot of pride in himself. He is a leader of 13 chickens and ignores about maybe 3-5 of them. We don't know ourselves what species of chicken he is.

  1. It could be many things. Oftentimes, roosters will make that screeching sound when they feel content or when they are warning the flock of danger. It is probably nothing more, however I would keep a close eye on him to see if he is showing signs of a respiratory issue or if there is any kind of mucous or discharge which could be the sign of a more serious health problem.

  2. Bear in mind that roosters can become depressed as a result of a digestive deficiency, and also as a result of a lack or order.  I'm not sure what the usual rooster to hen ratio is, but could he be overwhelmed?

  3. Most roos make noise if the hens do and sometimes just to be heard or there could be danger around and they do this to try and scare off.
