Someone told me that they could tell that i was an alto - by the way I spoke. But can an alto manage to belt the whole of Defying Gravity - from "Wicked" - The musical? As I've been told that its a song for a soprano...so im confused!!

Defying Gravity can be sung by an alto so long as you can belt. Idina IS an alto if I am not mistaken. A mezzo-soprano (high alto) to be exact. I think even a contralto/tenor could sing this song so long as they can belt in their higher range and have the air support.
Someones speaking voice gives 0 indication of their range. In America we all talk lower than we should. Your speaking voice has several factors, regions, etc. Anyone telling you your range from your speaking voice is full of s**t.
