  1. A news service is an organization that collects news from other countries, and within the country, for distribution around the world,

    Examples are:

    1)  Reuters -- a British-based news organization and the largest in the world. It runs an economic service, a news service, a photograph service and since the late 1990's it has taken over and runs a TV news service.

    2)  Associated Press (AP) -- New York based American wire and photo news service.

    3)  United Press International (UPI) -- This was (is???) a NY based American wire and photo news service that also had half shares in a TV news syndication service (UPITN) which has been absorbed into APTV.

    4)  Agence France Press -- Paris Based French wire news service.

    5)  There are regional wire services also such as the one that covers Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. Also, there are national internal news services -- ANTARA is the internal Indonesian news service.

Some large newspapers throughout the world have "Syndication Services" where they send some of their most important stories, or stories from their senior columnists to other newspapers around the world.

  2. When you read a story in the paper it will usually have a byline or a news source.  AP wire is one such source.  That's the only thing I can think of she may mean.
