  1. Local city transportation is through motorcycle taxis, collective (yellow) taxis, small buses, big buses (molue) and also private vehicles. These are rather inexpensive.

In Nigeria, due to some tax incentive, one in every two cars is a company car. Sometimes drivers run errands in the city and they avail themselves of the opportunity to "rent" the car for a couple of hours.

Unusual in Lagos, there is a public water ferry service which works quite well and is worth a try.

In most cities, traffic is horrendous and you can expect from 1 to 2 hours commuting time. Personal transportation is a must. If you have a company vehicle, you will also need a driver, to save you the time to find a parking space and/or avoid your vehicle to be looted. I know of several NGO volunteers who bought rather cheap small motorcycles and were quite happy with the solution. A French guy even drove his motorcycle from Lagos to Dakar (6,000 km) but he had diplomatic number plates and this probably saved him a lot of trouble at customs.

Between cities, you have road transportation through coaches, some new and luxurious but most of them rather dilapidated. Most travel between cities is  by air. Some airlines are of a very good standard, like Virgin Nigeria, Aerotransport, but many others are hole-in-the-wall companies with badly maintained aircraft.

There are good standard coach lines between Lagos and Accra and international air lines between Nigeria and UK, Holland, France and Germany as well as some African countries (Ghana, Senegal, Cameroun, DRC, Ethiopia and of course South Africa).

  2. Nigeria pretty much stays in Africa.... it doesn't go anywhere else.
