  1. It depends on the state you live in, the amount of time b4 a teacher earns tenure.  Non-tenure means that they have to renew their contract each year.  The principal has to sign off showing that the teacher is adequate!  In other words:  IT'S LIKE WHEN YOU GET A PART-TIME JOB AND YOU HAVE A 90 DAT TRIAL PERIOD. (to prove you are qualified)

  2. nontenured teachers can be fired without much reason.  Tenured teachers have a hiring if the school wants to fire them which is very difficult for the school.  In NY we need to work at the school for 3 years then present a portfolio of our work over the last three years.  Nontenured teachers are not promised a job the next year.  A friend of mine had a full time job this year and next year he only gets part time.

  3. Tenure laws vary from state to state.  In Illinois, a person can be tenured after four years of teaching.  This means the School Board must vote and grant them tenure.  Tenure means job security, and a tenured teacher cannot be dismissed from their job for political or budgetary reasons.  A nontenured teacher can be dismissed after their first, second, third, or even fourth year if they are not granted tenure after their fourth year.  You cannot get tenure before this in Illinois.  A nontenured teacher has no right to his or her job; tenure gives a teacher that right.

  4. Repeating what has been said, a tenured teacher (continuing contract), does not have to be evaluated every year and has more rights to his/her job then a non-tenured teacher. It varies by state, some states don't allow it. It was put in place to keep school districts from firing their higher paid teachers every year and replacing them with lower paid teachers. It also allows teachers more academic freedom and some job security. A non-tenured teacher gets evaluated every year or so and can be fired for just reasons, or get laid off because of budget problems.

  5. it means they can fire you for not kissing ***. Depending on the school district and state, it usually takes 3-4 years to attain tenure.

  6. As the previous contributor said, it's a probationary period wherein you are subject to more evaluations to see how well you fit in the district.  Each state is different as to when you are deemed a permanent teacher.  During budget crises, probationary teachers are the first ones to be let go.  Those with senority have the best chance of remaining in a district until retirement barring any other unforeseen circumstances.

  7. It means they don't have 7+ years on the job
