This is a potentially broad subject, and it is hard to determine what to say about it.  Petroleum is extracted from underground deposits; it is a mixture of hydrocarbons, sulfur compounds, and other impurities, and the refinery breaks this mixture down into separate products: gasoline, Diesel fuel and home heating oil, heavy oil for steamships, and asphalt.  The energy content of gasoline is about 120,000 BTU per gallon.  (One BTU is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree F.)
