Question:

What is okay to eat when you are pregnant?

My husband and I have been looking at tons of websites but we can't ever find anything that's specific. I don't know what I can and cannot eat. I'm only a few weeks so I need help with specifics. I love sugar, but I don't know how much I'm really allowed to take in. How much does the food I consume actually effect the baby being as small as it is?

  2. All COOKED meat, avoid eggs not fully cooked, blue vein cheese, basically everything. Remember to wash your hands after handling raw food. Congratulations & good luck

  3. this is wat i got at a local wic clinic, (not sure if you know what it is but its for pregnant woman and stuff) i have some brochures but this is just tha pyrimad... its says, bread, cereal, cooked rice cereal or pasta... (61/2 to 91/2 oz daily) eat dark green veggies like broccoli spinach and other dark leafy greens, orange vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes, eat more dry beans and pease like pinto beans, kidney beans and lentils..eat up to (3 to 3 1/2 cups every day) fruits, eat fresh frozen canned or dried fruit, go easy on fruit juice,, (2 cups every day), for milk it says choose reduced fat low fat or fat free when you choose milk yogurt and other milk products, if u cant drink milk choose lactose free products or other calcium products .. (3cups daily)... meat and beans, choose lean meats and poultry bake it broil it or grill it.. vary your protein routine choose more fish beans peas nuts and seeds.. 3 ounces of protien is about tha size of a deck of playing cards(dont ask thats wat it said) .. (6 to 7 oz everyday)...

    then at tha bottom it says make most of your fat sources from fish nuts and vegetable oils, limit solid fats like butter margarine and shortening and lard as well as foods containing those fats... check tha nutrion facts label and choose foods that are low in saturated fats , trans fats, and sodium... choose food and beverages low in added sugars...  

  4. Stay away from deli meat, sushi, raw egg and salads that have been sitting for a while, make sure chicken and any meats are cooked well. Dont drink coke, or caffine, well no more than 200ml a day, avoid spice's and hot foods, apart from that, eat what ever you want!

  6. As far as what to eat just try to stay healthy and make sure to take prenatal vitamins. The only thing prenatals don't cover is protein and calcium so make sure to get plenty.

    I got this list of things not to eat from a few different websites.

       *  Raw Meats and Seafood including sushi - all uncooked and rare meats and seafood should be avoided due to high risk of listeria and salmonella poisoning.

        * Deli meats including hot dogs - these deli meats might be contaminated with listeria bacteria which may result in miscarriage or even a stillbirth. It's safe to eat deli meats if you reheat them until steaming hot.

        * Refrigerated smoked seafood - for the same reason of listeria contamination. It is safe if they are contained in cooked dishes. Canned and shelf-stable versions are safe to eat.

        * Raw eggs - raw eggs may contain salmonella. Some Caesar salad dressings, mayonnaise, homemade ice cream and custards as well as Hollandaise sauces may be made with raw eggs. It is best to check with your server in a restaurant; if in doubt, it is best to avoid it. In addition, unpasteurized eggnog should be avoided.

        * Fish high in mercury - avoid high-mercury fish such as Shark, Swordfish, King Mackerel and Tilefish. Also limit fish intake to no more than 2 servings per week.

        * Soft cheese - avoid the following soft cheeses: Feta, Brie, and Camembert cheeses, blue-veined cheeses, queso blanco, queso fresco and Panela. They are safe to eat if they are labelled pasteurized.

        * Refrigerated pâtes or meat spreads - for the same reason of listeria contamination. It is safe to eat the canned or shelf-stable versions.

        * Liver - liver is a rich source of iron. However it contains a high level of Vitamin A. Large amounts of Vitamin A can be harmful to the baby.

        * Unpasteurized milk and juices

        * Alcohol - many documented fetal abnormalities and birth defects have been associated with alcohol use during pregnancy.

  7. Pick up a copy of "What to eat when you're expecting".  The list of what is good and what is bad during pregnancy is way too long and in depth for Y!A.  That book will be a great help to you and hubby.

Sugar should be fine in moderation.  I was a very strict artificial sweetner user but I was told not to use them once I became pregnant.  I switched over to sugar and haven't had any problems.  My sugar test came out fine as well.  The main thing that you want to be aware of is any bacteria that you could consume.  You have the abililty to fight it off but the baby doesn't.  When in doubt, don't eat it until you can be sure that it is ok to eat.

  9. Well the best thing to do is to tell you what not to eat! Jessica has her list right! I am expecting and mostly I avoid these things:

    Caffeine!

    Raw meat!

    Deli Meat (this one was new for me.... it has to be heated)

    Sushi

    Fish (also new because with my last two pregnancy they said to eat lots of tuna... now you should not touch it, and it makes sense because  of the mercury in fish)

    Any product that is not pasteurized

    There are lots of foods you can still eat. Focus on the ones that will give your baby good nutrition. Like lots of vegetables, milk and cheese.  Chicken, hamburger and steak are ok but be sure they are cooked all the way. Remember you only need an extra 300 hundred calories a day so don't splurge to much. I'm pregnant too so every once in awhile give into that craving for ice cream and pickles.

No sushi or raw meat that is gross anways lol.. but as for me i eat everything i can find haha but not raw anything sushi is nasty to me :P ughh.. and not alot of tuna.and my doc told me no hot dogs or lunch meats.. so that about sums it up. I wont lie ... i ate hotdogs and bologna. can't help it :( but dont eat much!

    just three important words to think about when you eat...lots of veggies: that feed and nourish the entire body for you and your baby; lots of fruit for more nourishment; organic foods as much as possible so as not to expose your baby to all those unhealthy chemicals in the grocery store foods; nothing prepared from boxes, cans, of frozen cabinets...eat fresh foods that you know what is in it.

    also eat lots of food all day in small amounts...

    no drugs, smoking, drinking or other nasty things like that...

    this is the best time of your life so enjoy it...also the healthier you eat the healthier you baby will be...

    and get some info on how good nursing is for you and baby...as I said earlier: HEALTHY! HEALTHY! HEALTHY!

Have you asked your doctor?  There are a lot of good books on pregnancy, including your diet, but only you and your doctor will know if there's anything in your medical history that would alter your diet.  Also, a lot of women develop gestational diabetes while they are pregnant.  I did, and that changed everything!!!  I had to measure all of my food.  Had to have servings of everything for each meal outlined - veggies, proteins, etc.  Oh yeah, I had to have dinner for breakfast, breakfast for dinner and six small meals a day.  And no sugar!!  So I would recommend talking to your OB/GYN.  Until then, lots of veggies, fish, fruit and make sure you get your prenatal vitamins.
