No, it' not. Early 1800's football in england was more like rugby or aussie rules than soccer, eg. you could usually run with the ball or mark the ball and then get a free kick but there were no univeral rules. Soccer rules only began to be formulated in London in 1863 (and still contained the marking rule), 5 years after aussie rules was already up and running in Melbourne. The word 'soccer' comes from the 'Association' which was founded on the 1863 rules.

I was about to jump in and write a long ramble about soccer being the older and start rambling on about the Aztecs using the heads of enemies as balls .. BUT .. THAT's the ORIGINS of soccer.. It wasn't until i read timeponderer answer and remembered reading those facts. So He'll get my thumbs up and if we get to vote my vote.
