Besides being  my ancestor? (LOL.. that's if you ask my mom's family LOL)

He is supposed to  have been the first recorded European to "discover" America.. 500 years before Colombus.

But Colombus DID "discover America" too, because 1) the vikings weren't really that friendly with the rest of Europe and 2) in 500  years the knowledge had been "forgotten" and records lost.. so in COlumbus's time they really honestly didn't know about America

Son of Eric the Red, he is credited with the discovery of Newfoundland, which he originally called Vinland or "land of vines."

Like Columbus, he actually got nowhere near the continental United States, Mexico or Canada.
