  1. There is only 1 parent, not both a mother and a father.  There is either a mother or a father either because of divorce or death.  An example would be a single mother raising 2 children.

  2. a traditional family has a mother and a father together.  A one parent household is either a mother alone or a father alone raising the kids.  ONE PARENT.

  3. I can't imagine you not understanding hat a one-parent household is today as there are so many of them.  Hopefully you don't know because you have what is called a nuclear family.

Normally you  hve two parents who live together. This is how families used to be and kids lived with the parents.  However, divorce has grown and when parents get divorced, the kids generally live with one and visit the other.  The kids and the parent with whom they live may be called a one-parent household meaning that in that household  there is only one parent rather than two parents living there.  You still have two parents, but they don't live together or both live with the kids.

Sometimes they call a home with 2 parents nuclear family or nuclear household.  that is only that nuclear means the center of a unit or cell and so it is a family as most think households should be.  But there are many where parents are divorced and it has grown to large numbers who are divorced.

I hoope this helps you understand the one-parent household.
