What is one way that I can harvest water power to create building electricity?

It's for a school project. I know that there is some piece of machinery that I can use to create electricity from water power. What is it? Please provide enough information so that I can use it in my presentation.

Two choices. A dam with a high velocity water turbine, coupled to a generator.

Or a fast moving stream diverted to a water wheel connected via belt to a generator. There are several different types of water wheel.

rereading your question, you mention "building electricity". The problem with water power is that you have to be near the water stream or dam.  That is why steam power was so important in the late 1800s, all the good locations near fast streams and rivers were already in use.
