Shivering is a homeostatic response to the environmental change associated with regulating body temperature. When the core body temp is colder than the prescribed rate set by central nervous system your body reacts by burning calories.The body begins burning calories by shivering which is intended to raise the core body temp. The last step is you central nervous will pull all excess blood from the extremities, and re-route the blood to the heart. This is the changing of skin color from pink to blue that can be seen on hypothermic victims.
