What is the difference in a camcorder with 15X optical zoom and a comcorder with a 40X optical zoom? Which is better?

  1. the x just stands for times so 15 times and 40 times, the optical zoom is instead of just showing the zoom through the lcd screen you can look through the view finder or lens and see the zoom through that as well

A 15 times zoom lens means the magnification of a distant object would look about 15 times closer than it would if you used the naked eye to see the object.  A 40 times zoom lens would make the object look almost 3 times closer than the 15 times one.  The longer the zoom lens the closer the objects appear.  While a 40 times zoom lens may bring the object closer than a15 times one, the quality of the kens may not be as good as the 15 times one.  There is a lot of engineering that goes into the making of the lenses and the result is the lens is usually a compromise between components and the zoom.  In many cases the lesser zoom lenses may be better in quality than the longer ones.  The choice usually depends on how you want to use the camera.
