There is also a town in Northern Ireland called Pharis, probably settled by Scots-Irish.

The person saying it is German is not using a reliable source.

Germany. I found it in www.ancestry.com and typed in the surname.  Then I went to the left side of screen to Did you Know,  then Place of Origin, and there was only one answer.
