  1. Brunette,

A veteran by definition has already devoted a portion of his/her life to the defense of this nation.

In most cases, this is only the beginning of their service to their nation and community.  You will find that veterans are more likely than their non-veteran peers to succeed in civilian life.  You will find that they continue to give to their community through organizations such as the VFW and American Legion.  If you look at the pillars of your community, you're likely to find an over representation of veterans.  In short, you'll find veterans give more to their communities and nation than the average citizen.

America owes its veterans for their very existence.  It is our veterans that have risked life and limb to keep our freedoms and our way of life.  America owes them a debt of gratitude.  The government owes them every single promise made to them and the people owe veterans that they demand that of the government and its politicians.

Sadly, it is mostly veterans and their families that support our troops primarily.  Our veterans usually point to the troops and ask that the support go there, but rarely (anymore) do our civilians do more than put a bumper sticker on their cars.

It is our veterans that ask the nation to support the mission, yet "certain politicians" are tripping over the bodies of my fallen brothers to undermine the mission.   Our veterans understand the difficulties of those fighting our battles.  Many have been in these wars already and yet the anti-war crowd only demands that they return if they really support it.  The anti-war crowd makes every attempt to undermine the mission of the troops and condemn them to failure.

I hope this helps but if you want to see more of the War on Terror and how *this* veteran  feels about supporting the troops, read my blog: http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-DfkctJU7d...

  2. our veterans should be given preference when they are seeking jobs especially gov jobs

they need GOOD medical care instead of the underfunded VA hospitals that do little to no good

and the best way to honor our veterans is to be good stewards of the freedoms that they put their lives on the line for

  3. Veterans give, in some cases, their lives so that we can remain a sovereign nation. Some vets give their bodies and become disabled in service to their country. At the very least they give role models for young men to look up to.

Our role in honoring them is to help the military members of today be adequately equipped, to never forget their sacrifice and to make sure they are taken care of physically, mentally and spiritually.

The best thing that America could do for itself right now is to insist that the constitutional rights be restored. We live under an administration that tramples on the foundations of our country's origin -- The Constitution.

  4. Some background information.

The VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) sponsors a national speech contest open to all high school students where the top prize is $30,000 for a five minute speech. The contest is called "Voice of Democracy". The VFW also names the theme each year. This year, the theme is "My Role in Honoring America's Veterans". Please note, the deadline to submit your speech to your local VFW post is November 1.

So this is a novel idea to ask a forum and gain some insights to how to write your speech.

In my opinion, our role in honoring America's Veterans is to keep our promise to them. We promised veterans that they would be taken care of when they return from a war, the latest being the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. We need to make sure that we as a country, all individuals, keep the heat on our elected representatives to ensure that the USA does not break our promise to take care of our soldiers. We cannot allow congress to withdrawl funding to Veteran Hospitals, to withdrawl funding and support for a war (whether or not you think the war is just or not).

    Good Luck on your speech.
