  1. petroleum energy is potential energy from  (a) biological state, to a thermal state, to a mechanical state.

  2. Any energy derived from petroleum, "oil".  For example, Gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, heating oil, some could even say Natural Gas as it is generally found and is created at the same time as petroleum.

It is arguably the most important form of energy in the world, it powers our economy's, and is the life blood of nearly all forms of transportation.

It is both a blessing and a curse, it is a blessing in that we [had] a cheap, plentiful, potent source of energy, it is a curse in that we have become hooked and are at risk of running out within the next few decades.  It has improved the quality of life for almost all, yet it has also contributed to war, greed, climate change, and to environmental disasters.
