  1. pin-yin is a phonetic transcription of Chinese language, most people believe it's used for Mandarin only but actually it's also used for Cantonese as well but denotes different syllables...

it will be "wo3" for Mandarin and "ngo5" for Cantonese

    so it's a phonetic system

  2. Pin yin is the romanization version of Mandarin Chinese.

  3. Pinyin is the most commonly used system to represent Standard Mandarin with the Latin alphabet.

  4. pinyin is a writing system, it can be used only for mandarin.

It tells you how to write mandarin phonetically in the roman alphabet (ABC) note though, that not all the letters have the same sound as they would do in english. Q for example is prenounced 'JI' in djinn, a Z its prenounced TS and an X is prenounced SH

in addition, they use little doodles and accents on the vowels to denote which intonation the sound has. mandarin has 4 intonations. short falling, short rising, and fall-rise and elonguated. same sounds and different intonations will result in different meanings. má for example means mother, and mà means horse.

this is what pinyin looks like: Wǒ jiào Bāo Yǔqín.

this sentance means: my name is Bao Yuqin (Bao is the surname)

sometimes instead of the accent, they use numbers then the same sentance would look like this: Wo3 Jiao2 Bao4 Yu3qin1

  5. It's the officially approved - andprobably the best - way of writing Mandarin in the Latin Alphabet.
