  2. The command ping is found in many operating systems and allows one PC to send some "test" data to another PC (or networked device).  It is usually to see if the remote PC or networked device is "on" the network and able to see the source PC.

    For instance, if you have a 2 PCs on your home network, one that you are using upstairs, and one that may or may not be turned on in the basement.  Instead of running downstairs to verify the computer is on, you could ping it (open a command prompt and type ping computer2name).  You can also ping it by IP address.


  3. A tool to establish if a connection can be made across a network to another computer, and to time how long it takes messages to get there.
