  1. The exact phrase here is: "Planting by the LIGHT of

    the silvery moon."

It was an old wives tale, from back in the 18th century

that farmers who planted their crops by night were

giving their crops a blessing of sorts.

  2. you plant according to the phase of the moon

I think the waxing moon is supposed to promote growth

  3. The traditional times for planting by the moon are listed in "The Farmers Almananc." It's just planting at the time that people have come to believe is the most favorable for development. It's superstition, though there may be some kind of (undiscovered) basis for the beliefs.

Whatever you might believe, The Farmers Almanac is great to keep on the back of the toilet for quick little articles.

  5. It is old folklore about planting at times when the moon's phase is usually "the dark of the moon" or during "a full moon." Some people believe that the moon phases effect the growth of the plants.

  6. If you are interested in planting by the moon, find you a copy of the farmers almanac.  It will tell you which crops to plant by the different phases of the moon.  Is there anything to it?  The answer you get will depend on who you ask.  Many farmers and gardeners swear by planting by the moon.  Others including myself don't see any evidence of it making any difference.  My grandfather wouldn't put a seed in the ground without referring to his Farmer's Almanac, and he was a very wise man.  So you will just have to make up your own mind about planting by the moon. I think planting when it is warm enough and the soil moisture is right is more important myself.

  7. phases of the moon are said to affect the crops look in the farmers almanac

  8. ? have no idea...

  9. My father always planted his root crops, or the ones that grow underground, during the dark phases of the moon. He planted the crops that grow above the ground during the light phases of the moon. Maybe it's superstition, I don't know, but he always had successful crops.
