  1. The sun naturally bathes the earth with polarized light.  A polarizing filter take advantage of that and can be used two ways ... one to reduce reflection in windows and calm ponds or other reflective surfaces and two enhance the northern or southern sky's blue.  The polarizing filter has the most effect at 90 degrees to the sun's path ... less as you aim the camera to the east or west.  It can also be used as an ND filter in a pinch to reduce exposure from one to one and a half stops


  2. Polarizing filters block light from certain angles. By doing this they deepen the blue of the sky and block many relflections from water metal, glass etc. Its almost a must have for photographers. For digital you need a circular polarizer not a linear one. You can also get graduated polarizers where one part of the filter is polarizing and the other  is not
