Political science is the study of how government works, at all levels - local, state, national.  Majoring in it includes studying how government works and how processes ought to be or can be improved.  

People who have a political science major often work in government, sometimes in the office of an elected representative, sometimes in a government agency.  Some people major in political science then go into other fields, such as teaching, or go into sales or other careers; it's up to you.
