When a patient is on a ventilator, PRVC (pressure regulated volume control) is a vent setting.  The breaths are delivered to preset volumes, and can either be ventilator initiated or patient initiated.  So a person can take a breath on their own, but the vent will still help, or if they "forget" to breathe, the vent will do it for them.
