I know that vet's make more money if they are in "private practice". What is private practice?

  1. It means they own the practice.  Vets just starting out (and even some established vets) work for other practices and are paid a salary.  This would include vets at places like Banfield as well as vets who work for other vets at smaller practices.  These vets are not 'private practice' and will usually make less than a vet who owns their own business.

    Add: Yes, you would buy or rent a building, purchase equipment, and hire staff.  Since most people just out of vet school don't have the $ to do that, they usually work for another vet for a while and save up until they have the $ to start a fully equipped practice of their own- the equipment necessary is not cheap.


  2. They are vets that own there own business , they are not through a corperation its strickly ran by them .
