  1. Product orientation was a business philosophy prior to the 1920's  (aka Production Era) where manufacturers stressed production of quality products and then looked for people to purchase them. In this era, they felt that good products with high physical quality would sell itself.

A good example would be Ford's mass production of "the horseless carriage" where Henry Ford said "they can have any color they want, as long as it's black."

At that time, production techniques were not very sophisticated so output was low. So, in a sense, this orientation made sense as customers would be happy to get whatever they could get. (supply was lower than demand).

  2. Product orientation is where the main focus is the product and not the market.  A product is made so that it meets its own needs and not that of the markets, the needs of the customers are secondary to that of the products.  A good example could be the buggati veyron, it was only created to prove it could be done and the market is so small that looking at that is irrelevant.
