I'm new to the middle blocker position and I'm trying to figure out the best technique for a swing block on the outside. Should my first step be across my body or with the outside foot toward the ball?

  1. out side foot towards the ball, if you step across your body there is more of a chance  you will hit the net. cross over on your second step

  2. It really depends on how far away you are from the ball, and how your "feeling" is (far or close).

Crossover is for "far reach" and "side step" is for "near by". The end state is to shadow your blocking hands **over** the ball without giving the hitter any chance, while not hitting your blocking partner (if you have an outside hitter joining you for blocking) with your body.
