ie: a Hydrogen attaches to an Oxygen with a formal charge of -1 that is more electronegative in (CH3)2CO

  1. It is the binding of a hydrogen nucleus H+ to a  negative or negatively polarized part of a molecule. The binding occurs often to electronegative elements such as oxygen, nitrogen or sulfur.

    In the case of acetone a proton will attack the oxygen to form an intermediate positively charged molecule state.

    (CH3)2CO-H]+ the positive charge on the oxygen.
