Just think of a proxy server as an intermediate or middle man or middle machine that takes all your ip requests that you make online displaying an anonymous ip not that of your own computer. This site gives a great basic explanation as to how it works.

A proxy server is a computer that can be asked to get data from the internet for another computer.

Example: Alice's computer asks Bob's computer to download a web page. Bob's computer downloads the web page from a web server, then sends the web page back to Alice's computer.

In this case, Bob's computer is a proxy server. The web server sees Bob's IP address, not Alice's.

If someone used your computer as proxy server, you probably have a trojan horse or some other malware installed on your computer. Get a scanner, such as Avast!, and scan for them.
