  1. Public Relations (PR) is a form of communication that is primarily directred toward gaining public understanding and acceptance.  It  tends to deal with issues rather than specifically with products or services. It uses publicity that does not require payment in a wide variety of media and is often placed as news or items of public interest.  PR is used to build rapport with the several publics any company or individual  might have -- for instance, customers, fans, workers, stockholders, voters, competitors, or the general population. Publicity releases, employee-training seminars, blogs, websites, and newsletters are examples of the media tools used in public relations.

  2. here's an example of PR: say Mr. Big is a celebrity and he is caught stealing money his PR person would talk to the press and calm the whole thing down it basically deals with press and stuff like that

  3. Basically it is about businesses and their communication with the public - or manipulation of public opinion, depending on your point of view. The workload can be varied it really depends what are you are interested in - poitics, consumer research, music promotion etc. It may involve planning ad campaigns, lobbying MP's or interacction with the media in its various forms.

  4. It means relations with the general public as through publicity and specifically, those functions of a corporation, organization, etc. concerned with attempting to create favorable public opinion for itself.

Is also used as a marketing tool to create new business and can be done through positive advertisement, or business promotions.  Sponsoring commutnity events is a good PR method.

In politics, most government elected officials depend on PR people to help spin a good public image of them or to reduce negative impact about something they may have done wrong.  Election campaigns depend heavily on good public relations people. There are times though that all the good PR in the world won't make someone look good.  Government special interests / lobbyists also use a good "spin doctor" to further their special interests through congress.
