Is it safe? What is the main kind of transportation (e.g. bus, train, etc.)? Is there a subway system of some sort?

  1. Everything is clean, efficient, and safe no matter which city you are in.  Come on...it's Germany and the public transportation system is engineered by Germans, of course it's good.

  2. Almost every village in Germany is connected to the bus net, so it's somehow possible to reach nearer towns without an own car (as well as there are just a few busses per day in the worst cases).

The regional train net is okay, so also smaller towns got a station in regular. High speed trains are running between the bigger cities.

Cities of about 80-100k or bigger often got trams, sometimes subways. Smaller sometimes too, but most times only busses.

The traffic net has a lot of smaller centres, so by changing you could reach each point of the country, if you got the time.

A little disadvantage is the price. Maybe a bit high.

Danger for personal safety is quite rare, especially compared to travelling by car. The tracks are safe, the drivers are well trained and (at least I hope so) in a good state, the equipment not too old.

If some possible delays are no problem for you, public travelling in Germany should be okay.

Oh, yeah, maybe I should mention. Since this year, smoking is definitly forbidden in every kind of public transport.

  3. Germany is a large country and it varies from place to place, especially as far as a subway system is concerned.I lived in the Black Forrest area for over 17 years and traveled all the time by bus and train. It is very efficient and reliable oh and clean!

  4. public transportation in germany are busses, trains and subways. they're safe but i think no matter where you are -area and time- something can happen anywhere. in the bigger cities the subway systems are pretty good.

  5. Compared to the US public transportation in Germany is a lot more common and often better than in the States. All major cities like Frankfurt, Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Hamburg, Hannover, Stuttgart have a subway system besides busses and streetcars. Smaller cities offer at least busses and/or streetcars. Usually you find precise timetables and ticket machines at all stations. The system is reliable and generally safe and transportation is a lot more on time than in the US. Only in the countryside busses aren't running that often.
