Question:

What is "Aussie Rules"?

Is Aussie Rules football just like rugby with a bunch of "house rules" or more like an amalgamation of both soccer and rugby? I can't tell the difference, except for the round/oval field and the short pants.

What are the main differences of this game to football (soccer) and rugby?

  1. There are no discernible rules, apart from a rather odd scoring system that gives 6 points for a goal and 1 point for missing.

    Lots of colour and movement.

  2. haha the short pants. Nah there are rules like when you kick the ball to a team mate over a distance of 15m+ and they catch it, no one can tackle them until they kick again kind of thing. and the goals are different, 6 points for a goal | |-| | (between the middle two posts) and 1 point for between the |-| |-|

The ball is different, the passes can be forward or backward and yeah that's all i can think of right now....

hope i helped answer your question :)

  3. Ok...

Aussie rules is sorta like a kicking version of rugby. Theres 6 points for scoring a "goal" which is getting it between the main posts, and 1 point for getting it though the smaller posts, a "behind". Its got a VERY large oval field and the objective is more built on speed and distance than strength and evasion. Whereas rugby is more about taking the ball from one end of the field to the other, aussie rules is more about accurate kicking and endurance. And compared to "real" football (what some unenlightened people call soccer), its a lot faster and has a lot less strategy, its more about working as a team to get as many points as they can as fast as possible.

  4. If you think that Aussie Rules is an amalgamation of soccer and rugby, you've obviously never seen it played at a high level or you didn't know what you were seeing if you have.

I love soccer and think it's a wonderful game, but Aussie Rules is at least as skillful but in many more dimensions than soccer. Players need to be fitter and much stronger and they must have marking and tackling skills in addition to kicking skills like in no other game. It's nothing like rugby which is a stupid game with no finesse or real skill. No other game, except perhaps the highest level of hockey moves at anything like the pace of an Aussie Rules game and no other game is as demanding of its players in terms of fitness and multi-faceted skills.

Aussie Rules players are also more intelligent, have better bodies and are much better looking than players in any of the other codes - the short shorts are a nice bonus. Rules rules!!

  5. It is the greatest game in the world!!
