All of the above answers are true, but somewhat incomplete.

DVD is a storage media like a VHS tape and CD. The laser used to read the data is red and has a large wave length which limits the amount of data that can be stored on the disk.

A Blu Ray disc is a similarly sized disc that is read using a laser that has a smaller wavelength (a finer laser) as such you can store more data on a Blu Ray disc than on a DVD.

IT IS NOT TRUE THAT A BLU RAY DISCs ARE CAPABLE OF HIGHER DEFINITIONS OR SUPERIOR SOUND QUALITY!!!

It only stores more data!!! Because it stores more data it can store more detailed pictures and soundtracks. A DVD holds up to 9GB of data, a Blu Ray stores 50GB. Within that 9GB the quality of sound and video can be just as high as a Blu Ray, just less of it.

Blu-ray disc is derived from the blue laser (violet colored) used to read and write this type of disc. Because of its shorter wavelength (405 nm),  more data can be stored on a Blu-ray disc than on the dvd , which uses a red (650 nm) laser. A layer Blu-ray disc can store 50 GB, almost six times the capacity of a  layer dvd.It also has better picture and sound quality than dvd.
