"desh" refers to land formerly known as Hindustan.  The Brits changed it to India.  Since Pakistan & Bangladesh were also part of India at one time, some may refer to people from these countries as desis also but usually it refers to mainly Indians.

A "desi" is someone from India or a person of Indian descent.  Indians refer to other Indians as "desi".   It is pronouned "day see".  It is not a derogatory term.

I think it comes from the word desh meaning country or local. It is a hindi/ urdu word. I have heard people from Pakistan and Bangladesh also call themselves Desi.

I know in Dubai brown (ie Sri Lankans, Pakistanis, Indians, Bangladeshi's ) people may refer to ourselves collectively as desi.

The people from other countries might have some other word .... that is equivalent to our word ''deshi'' which is in hindi !!!!
