What is "Flash" Memory in a phone?

my phone has 32MB of 'Flash' memory and i want to know what the flash part means. is this the same as normal memory or is it better?

Flash memory in your phone should be similar with an USB Flash drive found on your computer. Flash memory's advantage is that it requires no moving part. Its disadvantage is that its life is limited (e.g. 1 million write or erase cycles).
