Sun Microsystems created Java and it is available for download from the site linked below.

If you are running as an end user (the typical situation), download the Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE).  Unless you have a requirement for a specific version, just go with the latest 1.6 release (Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 is the current version)

If you plan to develop applications in the Java language, look at the Java Developer Kits (JDK).  Java has several different options depending on what you plan to develop.  If you are building typical applications, the SE version may be enough for you.  If you start building Enterprise application, look at the J2EE (Enterprise Edition) for additional features.

Well, JAVA is a programming language.. but I have a feeling you are referring to the JRE (Java Runtime Environment) which is a plugin that will allow your computer to run certain Java apps.
