What is "Misty" a nickname for?

I have knowledge of several girls/ women whose name IS Misty.. not a nickname for anything.  It is on their birth certificates.  Given names do not always "come" from anything, except what a parent chooses.

Almost any name.

"Chuck" is almost always "Charles", "Ted" is either Edward or Theodore, but some nicknames - "Slim", "Red" and "Curly", for instance  - don't correspond to specific names.

She could have been Elizabeth or Myrtle or Missouri. An appalling number of children got named Missouri in the 1800's, for political or historical reasons.

i dunno- my neice's name is Misty and it is not short for anything- I do have a nickname for her--but she will kill me if i tell you.
