What is "Reg plate"?

I want to sell my car and I'm filling a form where I have to enter reg plate with as an example "Y". If its not the full plate number, which letter is it? Thanks for your answers.

  2. It indicates what year your car was made. For example Y reg would be year 2000- 20001.

    Its the first letter on older cars.

    These days (newer cars) the year is showed in the 3 and 4 number for example 51 is 2001

  4. It means the registration letter. As an example, with a suffix plate, eg, ABC 123 D, the registration letter is 'D', referring to 1966. This was the case up until 1982, when the registration letter swapped to the start, eg A 123 BCD was reistered in 1982/1983. The next year, it would be B 123 BCD, then C 123 BCD, etc, up until 2001, when the new codes came into effect, there being two registrations per year;

    AB 51 CDE is registered in 2001. AB 02 CDE & AB 52 CDE are registered from March 2002 & September 2002 respectively, being '02' and '52' plates, up to the current AB 08 CDE. AB 58 CDE will come out in September this year.
