  1. John Sweeney (loudly, at top of voice, stridently): "You cannot be serious!"

  2. So far I haven't found anything to suggest a practice in Scientology called "character building".

    Here's what auditing is:

If you're being audited, you have an auditor and you have an "e-meter" (electro-psychometer). You hold onto to tin cans which are connected to the "e-meter" and you tell the person auditing you all about the bad things you're feeling. The "e-meter" measures your electrical output when you answer and the fluctuations of the measurements cause a small needle on the machine to bounce around. The person auditing you is supposed to interpret the bounces of this needle in order to determine if you're properly "clearing" yourself of your negative emotions.

There are several problems with the e-meter. The E-meter has no device to control the constancy of current. The instrument is subject to polarization. It is not a quantitative instrument due to uncontrollable variations in skin contact and current. The machine does NOT even detect whether or not a human is using it - it registers "definite emotional anxiety reactions" while hooked up to a tomato.

It was ordered by a judge that the e-meter be labeled with this warning:

"The E-Meter is not medically or scientifically useful for the diagnosis, treatment or prevention of any disease. It is not medically or scientifically capable of improving the health or bodily functions of anyone."

Auditing is also exorbitantly expensive. Auditing is purchased in 12.5-hour blocks, costing anywhere from $750 for introductory sessions to between $8,000 and $9,000 for advanced sessions.

  3. Never heard of "character building" as something in Scientology.  That's not at all like auditing.

Here is a very good description of what auditing is from our

    What is Scientology web site.

  4. There is no process called "character building" in Scientology.  In fact, we would regard such a process as an oxymoron.

Per Scientology, people have an inherent ability to assume any character they wish to.  Unfortunately, past stressful experiences leave them with fixed aspects - such as shyness, anxieties, hatreds, etc.  This gives the false impression that character can be changed or enhanced by experience.  But in fact painful experience actually reduces a person's control over their character.

When you alleviate their past painful experiences with Scientology auditing, people regain their ability to assume whatever beingness or character they wish.  To regain your ability to be yourself is true freedom.

  5. Never heard about "character building" and I have been in scientology for around 20 years.

The best character building is to be your self. The best you is you.  Aware

  6. "Auditing" gets rid of unwanted barriers that inhibit, stop or blunt a persons natural abilities as well as gradiently increasing the abilities a person has so that he becommes more able and his survival, happiness and intelligence increase .

A trained Scientology auditor uses exact procedures to direct a persons attention onto the causes of these unwanted barriers and help the individual, through the use of communication, to get rid of them. The word "auditor" literally means one who listens .

I don't know what you mean exactly by "character building" but it implies "adding something"  to the person. We don't do this in Scientology, so there would be no similarity to auditing.

The difference is auditing only gets rid of unwanted barriers so the individual becomes more himself. Nothing is added to the person.

Hope this helps answer your question.
