  2. to commit heresy one must be baptised, heresy is a public announcement of a statement that goes against the theology of a certain faith, eg. in christianity saying that jesus did not rise from the dead. excommunication is when one is expelled from their chosen church in defiance of church law, eg. catholics who refuse to recognise the pope as the successor to the chair of peter and publicly state that. however in both cases they can be reinstated if publicly they show repentance and sorrow for their actions

    But seriously, a Heresy is a teaching that goes against the establish dogma of a particular church.    The Catholic church considers the the Protestant Reformation a Heresy.

    Excommunication is when a church expels a member for some reason, such as Heresy.   Excommunication means a member may not partake in church functions or rituals.  They are cut off from the life of the church.
