What is "the maritime community"?

If someone was to ask how "the maritime community" could reduce its carbon footprint, what do they mean? I understand the reducing carbon footprint, I'm just not sure about maritime community.

"maritime community"  term has to do with sailing, ships, ports, sailors, sea vessels, and the people that run them, work there, and are interested in that kind of stuff.  also could be a community located on a sea or a port.  as far as their carbon footprint, you have a very good question there, and i am unsure.
