  1. Well, the definition can vary by state.  Normally, it covers you and sometimes the people in your car/household, if you are in  your car, and another car causes the accident, but they have no insurance.  It also covers if their insurance company is bankrupt, or if it's a hit and run.  It typically covers YOUR bodily injury, medical payments, lost wages, pain and suffering - whatever it was you could have sued and recovered, if the other guy WAS insured.

It ALSO covers the named insured and resident household members, if you're hit as a pedestrian, by a car with no insurance, or hit and run, or their insurance company is bankrupt.

YOUR AGENT can give you state specific and policy specific information on this!! Because it does vary!  If you're acting as your own agent, you'll have to read the endorsement to see what it covers.  It does vary by state.

  2. That is coverage under which your insurance company will pay for your losses even if they are due to an uninsured (or underinsured) driver.  You should have it.

  3. Protects you against people without insurance.  I didn't have it four years ago when my car was hit by a hit and run driver.  My insurance wouldn't pay to fix my car so now I have a big ugly dent in the back of my car that I can't afford to ever fix.  You're better off getting full coverage!
