what is RAC in railways? wat do mean when RAC 23 ?

rac, in fact , is reservation against cancellation.

it means that you are entitled to travel by the train you have booked your ticket. but you will not be given a berth for sleeping at night. so you will have to sit in the seat allotted to you during night also in case your rac status is not changed and you are not allotted a berth.  

rac 23 means that there should be 23 cancellation of tickets by the people who bought their tickets earlier to you in order to you to get a confirmed berth so that your night's sleep is secured.

you need not worry about this if your date of journey is not  immediate, for by the time you proceed on your journey, rac status may be changed to confirmed status.

sometimes, railways add additional compartments, and your problem will be solved!

you can monitor your status through the pin provided in the ticket, or at the counter from time to time.

if you still have to travel with an rac ticket, keep some extra money to please the ticket checker. this is when  they become demi gods and earn lot of money!

sitting through the entire night is very painful man. believe me!
