  1. Its called remote desktop connection, if you got your friend password and your friend got your password, they can both access pc to pc

  2. VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing. It is a way for you to see and control (but in many cases not hear) what is going on on a desktop connected to your network. Many programs are compatible with VNC. Apple Remote Desktop is VNC compatible. I'm not sure if Windows Remote Desktop is VNC compatible, but TightVNC is a commonly used VNC client/server on Windows. For the Mac to control other computers the user needs to buy Remote Desktop. The Open Source VNC client for Mac OS X is ChickenOfTheVNC. In Linux (Ubuntu) you can use Terminal Server Client with TightVNC. Typically you need the IP address of the computer you're going to control, set the privilages, and input the password you set on the host computer you're controlling. It goes like this: Open the client, input the IP address (ex: 192.168.1.2), select the protocol (ex: VNC), Type in the user name, click connect, it'll ask for the password, and you're in. And depending on what options you set you can control, observe, etc.

There are other protocols as well. RDP, RDPv5, XDMCP, ICA. All these I got from the Terminal Server Client I use. I'm not familiar with these other protocols, but I just got started using VNC for helping my parents out fixing things on their computers while talking to them on Skype. It's really cool. I control their Macs from my Linux box. I'm sure you can do the same with any combination of Windows, Linux and Mac running VNC clients/servers. The only problems I can come up with are punching holes in your Firewall, but these holes may be open already and you may not run into problems. Otherwise, from a Mac perspective, it couldn't be easier than starting the Apple Remote Desktop service in the Sharing preference pane (from there you set your options/privileges). Similar ease of use in Ubuntu with the Terminal Server Client. Never tried it in Windows with Windows Remote Desktop, but I'm sure TightVNC can help. Point is you need a server running on the host computer before you can control it.

  3. webex.com will let you demo it for 30 days

  4. Remote Desktop, included with Windows XP Professional, enables you to connect to your computer across the Internet from virtually any computer, Pocket PC, or Smartphone. Once connected, Remote Desktop gives you mouse and keyboard control over your computer while showing you everything that's happening on the screen. With Remote Desktop, you can leave your computer at the office without losing access to your files, applications, and e-mail.

There are various programs that allow this feature.  We use remote desktop to help people, but you can also use Logmein for free. "Simple and secure access to your computer from just about anywhere" — BusinessWeek  https://secure.logmein.com/home.asp?lang...

  5. Remote Desktop basically refers to an application that lets you view, and sometimes access, someone else's PC. So your description was spot on.

If you've got Windows (not sure which version specifically), Click on Start, then Run, then type mstsc and click OK and see what comes up. You might be lucky.

  6. (assuming windows) use Windows Remote Assistance so that the one with trouble can connect to the knowledgeable one and watch what he does.  in vista you can just open my computer and search for it.  in xp, i'm really not sure where it is :(  he must request your assistance and you must accept his request for help

what i can tell you is not to plan on playing games, watching movies, or listening to music.  also broadband is a must, really (for both users).

    anything else?

EDIT:  if you want to remain secure do NOT use remote desktop, it gives you full access to his/her computer and passwords/priveleges/etc.  also, you may not be able to see what the other is doing w/remote desktop

  7. if you both have xp you can use windows xp remote desktop.
