For biology, I'm asked what is reproduction, and what isn't. (Yes or no answer)

1. New leaves appear on a tree in spring.

2. An amoeba divides in half

3. A bean plant produces seeds in long pods.

4. Pollen grains are released from a flower.

5. A starfish produces a new arm after losing one to a predator.

Thanks :)

  1. wel there are 2 kinds of reproduction asexual and sexual. sexual is just that and asexual is usually by itself or giving something of itself to another same species. u just answered yoru own question though! ha :)

  2. i'm guessing on these. i haven't had a science class in awhile but i think i'm right.

    1.)yes

    2) no

    3) yes

    4) no

    5.) no

i'd go to that website and study it a bit more though.

  3. 1. No, it's not reproduction because the leaves are part of the same organism on which they are appearing.  It would be like you growing a new fingernail if you lost one after slamming your finger in a door.

    2. Yes, this is asexual reproduction.  A new organism is produced even though it is a clone of the original.

    3. Yes, this is sexual reproduction.  The seeds have a unique set of DNA and are the result of fertilization.

    4. No, not yet.  Pollen carries the sperm, but it isn't reproduction until the sperm nucleus in the pollen fertilizes the egg in the ovary.

    5.  No, this is regeneration and no new organism has been produced.  However, if you cut a starfish in half and both halves grew new arms to make two starfish, that would be asexual reproduction.
