What is required for this?

One day, I would like to write and produce theatrical productions that can be held locally, but are high quality. (In other words, not cheap community theater, but good productions.) At first, I would start with just straightforward shows, but eventually I would like for some form of musicals to take place that include song and dance.

What would I need to get prepared for this? I don't want to waste time or money taking college courses i don't need, and I was curious if anyone here had any insight as to what I would need to prepare and train for this. Thanks!

Try a local learning exchange classes - often there are crash courses called

2/3 day hollywood film school.

Try looking for resources at your local colleges

Try volunterring/attending local live theatre -networking etc

The best way to learn something like this is to first participate in local theatre and learn all about it. Learn what it is like to produce, act ,direct and design. Experience is a wonderful teacher.

Ask if you can help with a community play. Whatever is going on locally, if you get involved, you can learn how it works and get credit for being an assitant producer. After a while of that, you'll get recognition and will be able to start your own.

While I hope not to insult you, Some of us might take offense at the term "Cheap Community Theater".

   I've worked community and independents, and rarely ever found them to be low end in the sense of quality, even to the scope of many productions.

  Again, no offense meant, I hardly equate any education to WASTE.

  Certainly having a passion for writing, and theater might be a way to be involved, as well as learning every "technical" aspect of theater you can.

   Writing and "producing" originals, might be more challenging, but not impossible, and might lend themselves to smaller, independent venues, initially.

   "Training" should probably include,,,for the novice at least,,, a sense of what a script involves, as opposed to a text written as a short story,,, at the least, to be able to "adapt" that story. Obviously many characteristics would be similar, such as character development, plot, etc.

   Once more,,,no offense, but very strictly speaking QUALITY has no degrees, IE: High/low. Some is or isn't "quality"

   With respect, I still suggest education directed at theater in the sense of your direction.
