  1. That depends on many factors.  First you need to make sure and complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid - www.fafsa.ed.gov) and any in-house application that is required by the school's stated deadline.

I'm sure it works generally the same at most schools, so I'll give you an example of what happens at our school: we have an April priority deadline (meaning that students have to have their FAFSA and in-house application completed and we have to have received it by that deadline).  We take all the on-time students and review them for all aid for which they may be eligible (grants, institutional scholarships, federal loans, instutional loans, and work study) based on their need (i.e. a student who has a 0 EFC will get more free aid than a student who has a 9000 EFC).

If there are any funds remaining, they get awarded to the "late" applicants (those who did not get their information in by the deadline).

Most schools will also have where you will have to have/maintain a GPA of 2.5 - 3.0 in order to receive the instutional scholarships.

Your best bet will be to contact Duke directly and ask what critera they use to determine scholarship eligibility.

    Good luck!
