What is required to teach at a 4 year university?

I want to go towards teaching in North Carolina at a college

4-year universities require a PhD to be a full-time faculty member (one of the criteria for ranking colleges is what percentage of their faculty holds the top degree in their field, usually a PhD).  If you want to teach at a 2-year college, a masters is usually enough.

I went to a small non-research college for my 2nd year and the teachers mainly had masters degrees with alot of experience. some had ph.d's but it wasnt a requirement. even the school i go to know which is a HUGE research university has many masters-level teachers.
