Question:

What is required to use a solar water heater with oil fired hot water based board heat?

I am looking to get this done professionally, but I would be interested to get tips from anyone who has such a system or has set one up. If you send heated water to the oil burner and reduce the amount of work the burner has to do, will it still work? Is there a better way without tearing out my existing heating system?

  1. The link I gave is to help you understand how it works.  This is a do it yourself site but having a pro. do it would be a good idea unless you love this kind of thing.

The solar system will have its own loop with antifreeze and a heat exchanger will allow it to add heat to your current boiler system.  This will reduce the amount of energy that has to come from the oil.  You are in a good position for this since you already have the hot water base board heat.

Sorry that link is not very good since it was just for hot water heaters.

  2. Stay away from any kind of oil heat. The cost is going through the roof.
