Question:

What is required to wear to water aerobics?

I will be starting water aerobics in a few weeks and am wondering what I should wear to class.

#1: Would there be a problem to wear a two piece outfit with a top that is similar to the top of a bathing suit and the bottom being swim shorts. Will I be able to move appropriately in the water with this swim outfit?

#2: Do I need to wear water shoes? Will this lessen any impact on my joints?

Thank you for your help.

  1. I've been doing water aerobics for some years, a two  piece will work. Shoes, U don't have to. If the bottom of the pool is rough shoes would be good.  Water is low impact so  unless U have bad joints I don't know if shoes would be of great value   to  U.

  2. Hi Lisa,

I would maybe go to a sports department store where they sell a variety of swim wear. Ask one of the sales associates. Another thought, ask your new water aerobic instructor for her/ his opinion. They're usually helpful. Personally, I'd wear a one piece suit and no swimming shoes.

  3. i have seen people wear two pieces to water aerobics...just keep in mind that you will probably be doing lot of bouncing and jumping so you will want to make sure that the top is supportive enough and also well fitted so that "the girls" don't pop out.

I doubt that your class will require water shoes however I believe that most people like to wear them for traction and/or so the bottom of their feet don't get all roughed up.

  4. I would suggest a one-piece suit, because of the movement. I have seen a few women in tankini, but as the other answer suggested, a bikini top probably is not a good idea, exposure.

Water shoes, not necessary, only used for tender feet that I am aware of.

Good luck. It is a great exercise, but I notice several at the YMCA here that visit more than work out.

  5. for the shorts...

as long as there not normal shorts that blow up in water

like get inflated and look like a parachute :P

  6. Wear what you want, just so long as there is adequate coverage of certain areas of your body.

You might want to talk to the aerobics instructor about whether water shoes are required or recommended.
