the drinking age here in ireland is quite strickly 18 to purchase and to enter a bar after 9:00pm . . some bars have even put there age up to 21 to avoid trouble from teens

pretty sure its 16 i was just in germany for 3 months and it was 16 there if not then its 18

there is no grey area here.  the law is 18 years of age.  you will be asked for official ID,  even if you are buying from a supermarket.  if you are going to a nightclub you have to produce ID before entering.

Under 18 can visit a bar without buying alcohol, during the day but must be off the premises by 9pm.
