  1. 17.5% on most goods.  Some items are exempt. It is known as VAT - Value Added Tax and retailers include it in the price you see in the shop.

Just for completeness the UK includes England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Most visitors to the UK from outside the EU can claim back VAT from retailers who subscribe to a scheme whereby you can get a refund of VAT when you leave the UK however the paperwork is very time consuming and is usually only offered on high value goods.

  2. It's a tax on goods purchased in the United Kingdom, also known as England.
